Haitian Kompa Legend HENRY Masters at Tangerine Mastering

Weehawken, NJ (PRWEB) February 22, 2009 -- Tangerine Mastering recently completed a multiple CD reissue and remaster project for Erold Henry, legendary Haitian Kompa dance music producer. Gene Holder, co-owner and mastering engineer, used Tangerine Mastering's vintage Neve, SPL and EMI hardware, in addition to the facility's Merging Technologies Pyramix DAW for editing and sequencing. "Erold Henry (who is known in Haitian Kompa simply as Henry) is one of the foremost dance music producers and remixxers of the 1980s, it was a great pleasure to work with him and witness his style," Holder adds. "Henry produced and recorded these 12 dance singles in the 1980s and this is the first time they have ever been on CD."

"I love the sound that Gene [Holder produced on the project. It has the tight, punchy sound we need--he gave it a greater body! Tangerine Mastering is a great environment for mastering and yields a finished product I could not get anywhere else."

Henry was an originator and pioneer of the Kompa style, his new releases will be titled Supa Kompa and Kompa Historique this is the first time many of these dance singles will be on CD. A revolution that started in the 1980s will have new life in 2009, says Henry.

"Transferring the 1/2 analog 2 track tapes on our Ampex ATR-102 into a Digidesign Pro Tools rig I replayed them through our outboard Meitner high-precision D-to-A converters," Holder says. "That way I could re-equalize and re-compress the material in the analog domain using our collection of vintage Neve, SPL, Pultec and Cinema equalizers plus Universal Audio dynamics units, and finally through our Abbey Road EMI Mastering Chain. Although the original tracks sounded great, mastering involves that essential magic that makes them sound consistent and adds subtle punch and enhances the overall level. The results, I think, are outstanding!"

Owned by Roger Johansen and Gene Holder, bass player for the dB's, Tangerine Mastering was designed by John Storyk of the Walters-Storyk Design Group. The working environment combines close proximity to midtown Manhattan within an artist-run production arts building that houses sound stages, recording studios, post production suites, independent record companies and college radio promoters. "We strive to provide a relaxed professional musical environment that enhances the final product," say Holder.

Mastering engineer Holder has worked with such artists as Pylon, Yo La Tengo, Stretch, and Freddie Johnston. Studio owner Roger Johansen founded Lillypad Recording in the 1980s and partnered with Holder in 1992 to open Jolly Roger Recording in Hoboken, New Jersey.

"We have created an acoustically precise room at Tangerine Mastering that offers a creative, comfortable modern atmosphere," Johansen confides. "We have also brought together the best of vintage and modern equipment, and mastering engineers that offer a broad depth of musical experience."
